||1 of 2 people found the following review helpful.| Interesting thesis, but with dense articulation|By Joshua N. Wiley|I read this work several years ago while studying Al-Farabi. (I read everything of his in translation at the same time).

In my opinion, Colmo's thesis is very intriguing, and he teaches much regarding Al-Farabi in general. However, I think the argument lacks the polish and clarity of, say, Remi Brague

This unique interpretation of Alfarabi's thought stresses the ways in which the tenth-century Arab philosopher self-consciously broke the metaphysical tradition that began with Plato. By examining Alfarabi's work as more than an extension or continuation of Greek philosophy, Colmo rethinks what medieval philosophy is and challenges almost universal assumptions about the origins of modernity.
